Oku-Hida Onsenkyo has the third largest volume of hot spring water in Japan and boasts one of the largest numbers of open-air baths in the country. This abundant hot spring water is produced by the active volcano, Mt. Yakedake. At its base are five hot spring resorts: Hirayu Onsen, Fukuji Onsen, Shin-Hirayu Onsen, Tochio Onsen, and Shin-Hotaka Onsen, each with its own unique spring quality and character. You can enjoy a variety of hot springs by touring the hot springs, including simple springs, bicarbonate springs, sulfur springs, and chloride springs.

When Takeda Shingen invaded Hida, an old monkey was found healing his wounds in a pool of hot water... This is said to be the origin of the discovery of Hirayu Onsen, a famous hot spring in Japan. During the Edo period, feudal lords from the Hokuriku region would use this place as a lodging to relax and unwind after their long journeys on their alternate attendance voyages. Since then, hot springs have continued to gush forth everywhere to this day. Hirayu Onsen is located at the foot of Mount Norikura, and even today it is a refreshing hot spring resort with a rustic hot spring atmosphere.

If you head towards Okuhida Onsenkyo from Kamioka Town along the Takahara River, the first hot spring you'll come across is Tochio Onsen. It's said that the area got its name from the abundance of horse chestnut trees that once stood here. There are many down-to-earth, unpretentious inns here, and the home-style cooking made with wild vegetables and river fish is very popular. Stream fishing is also popular around Tochio Onsen. You can enjoy the rustic atmosphere while taking advantage of the abundant nature.

Shinhotaka Onsen is spread across a plateau overlooking the Northern Alps. It is an open-air bath paradise where abundant hot spring water gushes forth from the riverbed. Hotels and pensions line the birch forest, creating a resort atmosphere. Shinhotaka is also the setting for Yasushi Inoue's novel "The Ice Wall," and is the trailhead for Mt. Yari and Mt. Hotaka in the Northern Alps.
